Течение в американском театре; возникло в 60-е гг. XX в. и представляло собой нечто среднее между традиционными театральными формами и хэппенингами [happening]. Во время спектакля актеры и зрители находились в общем пространстве, причем зрители принимали активное участие в спектакле. Вместо традиционной сцены для этого сооружалось специальное "пространство" [environmrnt]. Основоположник течения - Р. Шехнер [Schechner, Richard] - собрал в 1968 труппу, осуществлявшую его идеи в постановках как классических пьес ("Макбет" Шекспира), так и современных ("Зуб преступности" ["The Tooth of Crime"] (1973) С. Шепарда [Shepard, Sam]). Течение получило свое дальнейшее развитие в 70-е гг. во Франции, Италии и других странах
